In many other countries for swimmers and life guards’ shark attacks are serious threats. However in Sri Lanka shark attacks have not been recorded as yet but crocodile attacks have been prevalent in fresh waters.
Other than rare instances of attacks due to water based beings most accidents occur due to neglect of precautionary measures prior to and after entering a watery enclave. Such accidents mainly relate to the under mentioned factors.
Drowning is considered to be the second-highest cause of accidental death in Sri Lanka. On average, recorded drowning incidents show that 755 people drowned each year from 2016 to 2018 in Sri Lanka.
